ASLEF has urged the Labour Party to end the arms trade with Israel and support an immediate end to the blockade of Gaza allowing free movement of people, goods and aid.

In its motion to the 2014 Labour Party conference, the union condemned the appalling loss of life in Gaza following the recent bombardment by Israel particularly the targeting of civilians and the wholly disproportionate destruction of civilian infrastructure in the territory both of which are clear breaches of international law.

ASLEF general secretary Mick Whelan said ‘the world was shocked by the death and damage in Gaza as well the inert response of the international community. Labour Party members want their party to take a stand on this issue and say enough is enough. I very much hope the leadership will heed this call.’
