GMB has announced strike action will begin at Stansted airport at 5.30am on Wednesday (23rd May), after reaching ‘the end of the line’ in talks over work patterns for ground staff.

GMB suspended threatened strike action earlier this year, over the introduction of new rosters which would have led to a reduction in incomes of members after the employers, Swissport, agreed to enter talks.

However, officials say talks broke down last Friday and the union has called a total of seven days of strike action over the next three weeks.

Gary Pearce, GMB Organiser said; “GMB negotiators have been in talks to reach an agreement to resolve this issue since the agreed suspension of the strike action scheduled over Easter.

“It is a shame that Swissport made and then withdrawn a number of proposals including a return to the original 4 days on and 2 days off roster which would have settled the dispute.

“The proposals were withdrawn last Friday.

“GMB gave notice of further strike action on last Tuesday while have continuing to negotiate but without success.”

Officials say the company made no attempt to contact the union over the weekend to try to forestall the strike action.
