Political Campaigning in the Digital Age

From Occupy to the Arab Spring, from Gaza to Ferguson, we're often told how social media can liberate us from corporate news interests and allow activists to communicate directly with each other and the wider public.

We also hear about governments spying on all our online activity, and wonder whether organising online is safe.

Social media is a contentious and rapidly changing phenomenon that is transforming the way we create and consume media, and the way we engage politically. But how do we use it effectively as trade union activists?

This course will look at developing effective campaigns, and spreading them using Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, Instagram, blogs and a host of other social networks.

In 2015-16, the GFTU is working closely with Union Solidarity International (USI). USI is an organisation supported by major UK, Irish and trade unions in countries such as Brazil, Greece, Austria, North America, Europe, South Africa and Australia that aims to build grassroots international union solidarity using the latest technology. The one day courses will cover Myths and realities of social media, the social media landscape, practical internet campaigning skills and developing your social media campaign.
