Ashworth HospitalStaff at a high-security psychiatric hospital have voted for strike action after two nurses were sacked for defending themselves against attack by a violent patient.

POA members at Ashworth Hospital voted for action following the dismissal of Kevin Gregson and Peter Hilton. The two nurses claim they were head-butted and spat at by the patient who is alleged to have had a history of violence.

POA general secretary Steve Gillan said: “POA members are outraged at the decision of Mersey Care Trust to dismiss them for defending themselves in a violent situation.

“It is ironic that the patient was convicted of several assaults against nurses in the incident and had ti pay compensation, yet Mersey Care Trust sacked out members even though the police stated they had no case to answer.”
