thank a teacherTalks have taken place between the ATL and NUT over a merger that would create a “super union” of more than 450,000 teachers.

The informal talks are in a preliminary stage but, if an agreement is reached, it could lead to one teachers’ union if the NASUWT could be persuaded to join too.

NUT general secretary Christine Blower said: “We have worked very closely with ATL and other unions in recent talks with the government and continue to believe a single teachers’ union is on the interests of the profession.”

ATL general secretary Mary Bousted said: “We are not in formal talks with the NUT and other unions, but have been working with them on issues which matter most to our members.”
