The six biggest energy companies in UK have announced profits of £3.7 billion while families struggle to feed their children.

Scottish Power, SSE, Npower, EDF, Eon and British Gas have announced 73% in annual profits during 2009 – 2012. Yet, the profits of energy companies still continue to rise and with a conservative party in power with a ‘free market’ ideology this is not going to be tackled any time soon.

The Trussell Trust has stated that there has been a 170% increase in people being given emergency food. The trust also has stated that there has been a 76 per cent increase in in the number of food banks, with the number increasing each week.

The majority of people turning to food banks are from working families struggling to get by with the wages they are on.

At a time where families are struggling to feed their children, workers are being taken advantage of by the use of zero hours contracts and where people are being taxed on benefits or simply thrown out of their house for having ‘too’ many bedrooms – this announcement is nothing more than sickening.
