After ten days of being in intensive care the young woman from Delhi sadly passed away in hospital. The woman was taken from Delhi to a Singapore hospital, which specialises in organ transplants, to receive additional treatment for her injuries. After being transported her vital signs deteriorated and she sadly passed away.

The six men who carried out this vicious attack have now been arrested and charged with murder of the student.

Her death follows recent reports, which surfaced, of a 17 year old girl who has killed herself after being raped. No action had been taken against the culprits and police put pressure on the girl to drop the charges, and marry one of her attackers. Her sister told NDTV network that “the police started pressuring her to either reach a financial settlement with her attackers or marry one of them.”

Throughout India, candles have been lit to remember the victim and activists are urging the government to review the legislation and support victims. Meenakshi Ganguly, South Asia director of Human Rights Watch, stated that “the outrage now should lead to law reform that criminalizes all forms of sexual assault, strengthens mechanisms for implementation and accountability, so that the victims are not blamed and humiliated.”

These attacks cannot continue in India. The views of the police when it comes to rape are a disgrace. It has also been reported by the Press Trust in India that a police officer has been suspended after refusing to register a rape complaint.

I again urge our activists in India and across the world to support our brothers and sisters in campaigning against these unlawful crimes. Our thoughts are with the families of victims who have lost a loved one to this disgusting crime.
