Unison, NIPSA, Unite & SIPTU marched with banners. Cara Murchan told USi that “we’re here to show the pro-austerity parties that we’re not going to accept closures of local hospitals, the stripping down of local services and taking away services here in Daisy Hill”.

Phelim Jennings, from SIPTU described how a in country ravaged by sectarianism ” there is a cross section of the community taking part, there’s no sectraian division whatsoever when it comes to health”.

Unite in the Community had a strong turn out also and Tara McKeown, a young member said this was an issue that would affect her, her children and grandchildren.

The rally was followed by a march up the hill to the hospital where a letter was handed in to hospital management to reverse the decision.
