The shareholders will demand explanations about selling cars and water cannon jets for the repression of protests in RJ.

The Association of Critical Shareholders on 13 May will question the relationship between Volkswagen and Brazilian dictatorship (1964-1985), during the annual meeting of accountability of the company in Hannover (Germany). Shareholders will also ask for explanations about the alleged sale of cars and water cannon jets for the repression of protests in Rio de Janeiro.

We demand that Volkswagen immediately investigate and clarify these cases, in view of the recent 50th anniversary of the Brazilian military coup. Volkswagen must admit and assume their historical responsibility in this matter“, says the document which is available on the internet.

In the case of involvement with the military dictatorship , Volkswagen will respond on the financial contributions made to the Institute for Social Studies and Research ( Ipes ) and the Standing Group of Industrial Mobilization ( GPMI Fiesp ) , board created in the federation of industries in April 1964. According to the Association of Critical Shareholders, this money would have been used for the construction of a military – industrial complex in Brazil, under the guidance of the Superior School of War ( ESG ) .

In addition, representatives of the German company will be forced to stand on the complaint that at least three employees of its subsidiary Scania were dismissed and had passed on information to the police station for Political and Social Order ( DOPS ) after police arrested them for , allegedly being part of a “socialist movement “.

The Critical Shareholders Association is a nonprofit group that owns shares in more than 25 of the largest companies in Germany and therefore has the right to stand at the annual meetings of balance sheet presentation. The company questioned is obliged to answer something at the same event.

Regarding the sale of water cannon jets, the association argues that the mere existence of this product among those offered by Volkswagen “is inconsistent with ethical principles of the company.” The document also points out that this type of weapon has been used in Turkey, where the population occupied the Taksim Square against the construction of a housing development.

The GPMI Fiesp

The GPMI was a board created within the Fiesp officially on April 30, 1964; characterized as “the starting point of business between industry and dictatorship,” according to journalist and former militant Carlos Antonio Fon. Its official goal would readjust the Brazilian industry for the production of military equipment. Its performance, however, was deeper: it goes back to the cells logistic conspiracy preparing to overthrow President Joao Goulart since 1961.

The company Volkswagen Brazil appears in the minutes of meeting of the GPMI as one of the “firms that donated verbally “to the group.

Highlighting the close relationship between the military and large companies, the board of GPMI was necessarily composed of civilian and military members. One of these officers was General and former Minister Edmundo Macedo Soares e Silva, who had connections with several mega-companies , among which was the Volkswagen – plus Mercedes Benz , Mesbla , Mercantil Bank of São Paulo and Light , as pointed Uruguayan historian and political scientist René Armand Dreifuss in his book 1964 : the conquest of the state .
