Elise Buckle of UNI Global Union

We will be speaking to Elise Buckle of UNI Global Union about conditions in the finance industry. UNI is the global union federation for the service sector, and represents workers in major financial institutions. Elise is finance policy coordinator.

UNI has done extensive research over 21 countries, and discovered that despite making excessive profits, banks have been slashing jobs. Over 300,000 jobs have been lost in the sector since the start of the crisis.

For example, HSBC made $22,000,000,000 profit in 2011, but cut 30,000 jobs.

Given the destructive impact the banks’ behaviour has had on our economy, this lack of respect for staff is absolutely appalling.

UNI argues that there needs to be greater regulation of banks so that they invest in the real economy instead of just indulging in speculation. There also needs to be a new banking culture, with strong collective bargaining delivering global agreements.
