CWU members angry at “appalling” offers from management
Members of the CWU postal executive agreed to call a ballot after union negotiators received a series of what have been described as “appalling” proposals from Post Office bosses.
After having been kept waiting since April 2012 for a pay rise, staff were last week presented with an offer of fully taxable but unconsolidated lump-sums over the next three years tied to acceptance of a “Transformation plan”, which could see up to one-fifth of the network cut.
CWU assistant secretary Andy Furey said: “Post Office bosses are basically demanding that we sign up, in advance, to their ‘Transformation’ plan without us even knowing all the details of it.
“For example, they say they want to franchise ‘up to 70’ crowns, but they can’t even tell us which ones. And they call for a ‘more flexible combination of full and part-time roles’ but again, they’re not being specific.”
Counter staff are angry that they have been offered unconsolidated sums, while their Supply Chain and Admin grade colleagues have already been awarded consolidated 3.5% and 3.25% rises for 2012 and 2013 respectively.
Andy continued: “At a time when Post Office has reported higher than expected half-year profits and is forecasting a £90 million whole-year profit figure, it’s just plainly unfair to treat hard-working and highly skilled staff in this way – particularly when these are the people who have created this success.”
“I have written to Post Office chief executive Paula Vennells advising her of today’s development and making clear that, unless there is an urgent change of course, strikes may become inevitable.”
