UCU and UNISON members make feelings known at plans to 100 jobs at University of Bolton
Members of UCU and UNISON have overwhelmingly passed a motion of no confidence in senior management after the university put forward proposals to axe almost 100 staff, which would see 15% of the total workforce made redundant.
Overall, 91% of union members who voted registered a ‘vote of no confidence in the senior management team as a result of their handling of the collective consultation process on redundancies’. Despite the vote running for just three days, almost two-thirds (64%) of union members voted.
The two unions are consulting lawyers over what they say is a flawed consultation process by the university that resulted in the job loss plans. Furthermore, UCU and UNISON say the university must come clean over how much money was spent on a costly campus opened in the United Arab Emirates and reveal the full pay and benefits enjoyed by senior managers.
UCU regional official Martyn Moss said: “The situation at Bolton is serious. The senior managers have lost the support of the staff, which is unsurprising considering they want to make 15% of them redundant, but still won’t tell us what their pay and perks are. Knee-jerk job cuts are not in the long-term interests of the institution and the managers really need to open up the books so we can try and resolve the situation.”
